Farmers Market Recap 2020

Farmers Market.jpg

SSCO's 2020 Farmers Market at Nicollet and Franklin was a great success, especially after being on the fence as to whether it could be pulled off in the year of uncertainties.  Our customer base was significantly larger than previous years, as well as our EBT SNAP use, and donations of fresh produce to the Groveland food shelf.

The Farmers Market experienced terrific growth - adding hot sauce and honey as well as beautiful produce and flowers from Thao Xiong and Bao Xiong families. And that's not all - La Tortilla food truck joined the Market bringing delicious eats to the neighborhood, Phurpa Tsewang brought Tibetan jewelry and singing bowls, and local resident Richard Gordan supplied Market goers with microgreens.

Besides the added goods, the Market is now surrounded by a colorful pavement mural "Love Hope Unity" by local artist Alex Dresdner.  We are already looking forward to next year and adding more goodies like prepared empanadas and Peruvian desserts!

The Overlook Garden on 17th street is growing strong and regularly used by residents. The Overlook also hosted several Red Hot Art Workshops - bringing art lessons to community members from a variety of talented local artists. Be sure to stop by to smell the flowers and check out the new mural SSCO brought to the neighborhood, which is directly across the street and can be viewed from the garden!

The La Salle community garden at 1807 La Salle saw a productive year as well, while the garden plots are all currently claimed, if you are interested in joining the community garden, please contact Robert at greening@stevenssquare.org to be added to next year's waiting list.
