Volunteers will assist visitors who are blind or have low vision access the Red Hot Art Festival
We’re seeking volunteers to serve as Sighted Guides for the Red Hot Art Festival’s first-ever Touchable Art Fair. No experience necessary. Shifts are 11:30-3:00pm at the latest on Saturday July 13th. Sign up at tinyurl.com/RHA2019volunteers.
WHAT IS THE TOUCHABLE ART FAIR?
Thanks to a new partnership with Vision Loss Resources, Red Hot Art Festival will make itself the first “Touchable Art Fair,” providing specially trained Sighted Guides to welcome people who are blind or have low vision, and allowing visitors to physically touch some or all of an artists’ work. “Touch tours” are increasingly available at museums, but festival organizers are unaware of any other art festivals providing this specific accessibility strategy. The Touchable Art Fair will take place from 12 to 3 PM on Saturday, July 14th.
WHAT IS A SIGHTED GUIDE?
Sighted Guides are volunteers who provide greater access to the fair for individuals who are blind or have low vision through the Sighted Guide Technique, the most widely accepted, safest and most efficient way for a person with a visual impairment to walk with a sighted person. Volunteers will receive a special training from Vision Loss Resources staff on the technique, so no previous experience is necessary.
HOW WILL IT WORK?
On the day of the festival, participating Vendor Artists will display a special sign signifying that they are a participant in the Touchable Art Fair. Volunteer Sighted Guides will stop at booths with the Touchable Art Fair signs. They will provide an initial description of the booth’s contents and if the patron is interested in investigating the booth further, the Sighted Guide will guide the patron to the booth. The artist will introduce themself and explain what works the patron can touch, and any details about how to handle or interact with them.
I DON’T HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS TYPE OF THING!
No experience necessary! We will provide a special half-hour training at 11:30am on the day of the festival. The training is required, even if you have previous experience.
